This copy of the second edition of the Poems of Burns has been bound in the late nineteenth century by Riviere & Son in full brown morocco; gold-tooled spine with five raised bands; triple fillets around perimeters of both boards; double gilt fillets on board edges; gilt-tooled turn-ins and marbled endpapers.
This fine copy is testimony to Burns’ popularity in the nineteenth century. An American provenance is indicated by two gold-tooled leather bookplates on the front pastedown: celluloid magnate Marshall C. Lefferts (1848-1928) and merchant/philanthropist Adolph Lewisohn (1849-1938).
